FACULTY


Jeffrey P. Callen, MD

 

Jeffrey P. Callen, MD was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1947. He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1965, and went college at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1968 he entered medical school at the University of Michigan. Following graduation from medical school he began a residency in internal medicine, followed by a residency in dermatology, both at the University of Michigan Affiliated Hospitals leading to certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (1975) and the American Board of Dermatology (1977).

In 1977 after completing the dermatology residency, Dr. Callen joined the faculty at the University of Louisville, attaining the rank of Professor in 1988 and being appointed as Chief of the Division of Dermatology in that same year.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the Dermatology Foundation (1983-8), the American Academy of Dermatology (1994-8), Association of Professors of Dermatology (1996-9), Dermatology Services Inc, (1998 – 2004) and the American Board of Dermatology, Inc. (2003- ). He was the Chair of the Council on Education of the American Academy of Dermatology between 2003-2007 and remains on the Maintenance of Certification Committee. He is the current chair of the Re-certification examination for the American Board of Dermatology. 

Locally, he has served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family and Vocational Services, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Foundation, and the Speed Art Museum.

He is the author or co-author of 74 original articles, 153 case reports, 135 review articles, 30 editorials, 10 books, over 140 book chapters, and 140 abstracts. He is the current Associate Editor of the Archives of Dermatology.

He has been a visiting professor at over 187 Universities, been a guest lecturer at 162 medical society meetings, and has delivered 8 named lectures including the 2004 Everett C. Fox Lecture at the American Academy of Dermatology’s Summer meeting in 2004.

Most recently he received the Thomas Pearson, PhD Education Award from the American Academy of Dermatology (Feb. 2008). This award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in the educational programs of the organization.


 

Sharon M. Andrews, RN, CCS-P

 

Sharon Andrews, R.N., CCS-P has an extensive background in dermatology, having managed a dermatology practice for several years before entering the consulting field in 1995. She has additional experience in cosmetic surgery, having worked in that environment as a surgical nurse. She is the owner of DermResources, a consulting company dedicated to the support of dermatologists and their practices. Sharon is a charter member of the Association of Dermatology Administrators and Managers, ADA/M, and holds coding certification from the American Health Information Management Association. She writes a bi-monthly newsletter, DermNews, and a regular article in Practical Dermatology.


Brian Berman, MD, PhD

 

Dr. Brian Berman is Professor of Dermatology and Internal Medicine at The University of Miami School of Medicine.  He received M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University as well as completing residency training in Dermatology and NIH Immunodermatology Fellowship.  He joins the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2009. He is a former Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, is past President and Founder of The National Association of Veterans Affairs Dermatologists, is Associate Editor of The European Journal of Dermatology, is an Editor of the journals Cosmetic Dermatology and SkinMed, is Senior Consultant for University of Miami’s Teledermatology Consultation Service, and is on the expert panel for the Food and Drug Administration.

In addition to his faculty clinical practice and in-patient consultation service, Dr. Berman directs a broad-based clinical research program and Fellowship, primarily focusing on the study of the control of scarring.  He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific and clinical articles, chapters and books, has lectured extensively nationally and internationally, is the recipient of the University of Miami Dean’s Senior Faculty Clinical Research Award, was bestowed the “Scientist of the Year” Award from Sigma Xi and is included among “The Best Doctors in America.”


Richard Detlefs, MD

Richard Detlefs , M.D. moved to Atlanta from San Francisco in 1987 after completing a military obligation.  Dr. Detlefs joined Dermatology Consultants, P.C. in 1987 and is now a partner in the practice and President of Dermatology Consultants, P.C.  Dr. Detlefs has an avid interest in all areas of dermatology including the medical, surgical and cosmetic aspects. Dr. Detlefs is a board certified diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology.  He is married, with one daughter and resides in Atlanta.

 


Robert Swerlick, MD

Dr. Robert A. Swerlick is an Associate Professor of Dermatology and Interim Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Emory University School of Medicine.  Dr. Swerlick is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he also trained in Dermatology. He served on staff at the University of Oklahoma prior to an Immunodermatology Fellowship in the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Swerlick accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at Emory University where he worked 19 years.

Dr. Swerlick is an internationally recognized researcher and clinician. His research focuses on aspects of immunology and endothelial cell biology, primarily focusing on regulation of the expression of key vascular endothelial cell genes important in immunological responses. Dr. Swerlick maintains an active clinical practice with a focus on immunologically mediated skin diseases. He regularly teaches at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) annual meeting. He also serves as the Assistant Secretary Treasurer of the Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID), is immediate past President of the Georgia Society of Dermatologists (GSD). He serves on numerous committees and task forces of the AAD, SID, and GSD. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters.


David Cohen, MD

Dr. Cohen is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at Mercer University and practices with Dermatologic Surgery Specialists, Inc., in Macon, Georgia. Dr. Cohen completed his medical degree at State University of New York, Downstate, then went on to serve a residency in internal medicine at University Hospital in New York and a residency in dermatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Cohen is board-certified in internal medicine and dermatology. He has received various honors and awards, has extensive lecture experience with a focus on education, and has been an investigator in numerous clinical studies.

 


 

Seth M. Cohn

Mr. Cohn is a comprehensive financial planner with Capstone Financial Partners, that specializes in representing healthcare professionals and their practices.  He represents physicians in all facets of their careers from: training to practice; from practice to practice and from practice to retirement.  Mr. Cohn has taught at Emory University, Mercer University Health Systems, Morehouse University and The Atlanta Medical Center.  He frequently lectures on financial planning, disability insurance, cash flow analysis and retirement planning.  He is a regular speaker at various medical association conferences in and around Atlanta.

John E. Hedstrom, JD

John just recently joined the American Academy of Dermatology as the Director of Congressional and State Policy.  Prior to working for the Academy, John served as the Assistant Director of Government Relations for The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for nearly 4 years.  John has also lobbied for the America College of OB-Gyns.  John got his start in Washington as a lawyer for Porter, Wright, Morris and Arthur, LLP where he practiced in the firm's corporate litigation department for 4 years.  John is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and received his law degree from Marquette University Law School.
