GA DERM NEWS Michael Sharkey, MD , represented the GSD as their delegate at the 2011 MAG House of Delegates in October 2011 and attended the American Academy of Dermatology’s Dermatology Advocacy Network (DAN) Legislative Conference in September 2011. At the 56th Annual Meeting of the GSD at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the membership voted to amend the bylaws and change the society's name to: Georgia Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.
New Coding Question Hotline Service - The GSD has negotiated a discounted rate with consultant, Inga Ellzey, to review denied insurance claim issues and recommend action. 3rd Annual GSD/ADA/SCAN Foundation Skin Cancer Awareness Day at the Capitol was Wednesday, Feburary 23, 2011. Over 100 were screened. Resolutions were read in the Senate and House pronouncing the day, Skin Cancer Awareness Day. See pics.
The Georgia Society of Dermatologists has been awarded a 2010 Model State Society by the American Academy of Dermatology. The GSD will receive the award at the 2011 AAD Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Governor Sonny Perdue signed a resolution proclaiming November 2010 as Healthy Skin Month in Georgia. The GSD pursued this resolution in conjunction with their continued efforts to raise awareness of the importance of skin in overall health, encourage the public to keep their skin, hair and nails healthy, and to see a dermatologist for the proper diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions and serious diseases. Katarina Lequeux-Nalovic, MD , represented the GSD as their delegate at the 2010 MAG House of Delegates in October 2010. Mark Holzberg, MD attended the American Academy of Dermatology’s Dermatology Advocacy Network (DAN) Legislative Conference in September 2010. Nearly a dozen GSD members participated in the Skin Cancer Awareness Network Foundation (SCAN Foundation) “Skin Cancer Awareness Day” at the Atlanta Braves game on August 21, 2010, where they provided hundreds of free spot skin checks. Marc Baucom, MD gave free spot skin screenings at US Congressman David Scott's Annual Health Fair on August 14, 2010 in Jonesboro, Georgia. Highlights from the 55th Annual GSD Meeting, June 4 - 6, 2010. Jason Clark, MD (Emory) and Keith LeBlanc, Jr., MD (MCG) won the resident abstract competition; G. Williamson Wray, MD was voted into the office of Treasurer of the GSD; 9 colleagues were voted into membership, Jack Arbiser, MD, Suephy Chen, MD, Jamie Mackelfresh, MD, Brian Pollack, MD, Marilynne McKay, MD, Fiona O'Reilly, MD, Herbert Alexander, MD, Paola Bonaccorsi, MD and Jeff Smith, MD; and Mark Holzberg, MD transitioned into the office of President of the GSD for the 2010 - 2011 term. The 2nd Annual GSD/ADA/SCAN Foundation Skin Cancer Awareness Day at the Capitol was held on Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Free spot skin screenings were provided for over 160 individuals. The GSD has also been awarded a Special Recognition Award for Member Outreach.
The GSD congratulates fellow member, Alex Gross, MD! Dr. Gross was elected Vice Chair of the Georgia Composite Medical Board at their February meeting last week. He will take over as Chairman in July.
The GSD congratulates fellow member, Rutledge Forney! Dr. Forney is the Medical Association of Atlanta 2009 - 2010 President.

ADAM and AAPC Announce Dermatology Coding Certification Specialty Credential Designed for Coders with Superior Dermatology Expertise
The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC, http://www.aapc.com/), in conjunction with the Association of Dermatology Administrators & Managers (ADAM, http://www.ada-m.org/), announced the release of the new AAPC Certified Professional Coder in DermatologyTM (CPCDTM) credential. This specialty credential enables coders with superior knowledge of the dermatology field to receive certified validation. A team of leading dermatology coding professionals within ADAM collaborated with the AAPC to develop and co-brand the CPCDTM exam. Read more>>
AAD Board of Directors Continues to Examine Subspecialty Certification in Procedural Dermatology Issue Despite ABD Decision to Postpone. As many of you are likely aware, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) planned to consider an application for a subspecialty certification in Procedural Dermatology from the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) at a meeting in August. I wanted to inform you that the ABMS this week announced that it would postpone deliberation on the ABD application. Read more>>

The Award is named for the late Clark W. Finnerud, M.D., a member of the faculty at Chicago’s Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center for 47 years, and is intended to honor a dermatologist whose contributions as a clinical educator are exemplary. Dr. Finnerud’s generous financial support helped launch the Dermatology Foundation in 1964, and the Trustees created the named Award in 1971. |
